Thomas Marks
Tom brings expertise on content and communications strategies, positioning and profile-building to Marks|Calil. His work with clients is grounded in an outstanding knowledge of the international art and museum sectors – as well as a passion for both historical and contemporary art and a deeply-held belief in their public value.
Tom is an authoritative communicator in the art and museum sectors, most notably as the Editor of Apollo from 2013–21. In that role he worked to expand the reach and remit of the magazine, launching an online platform to publish daily content and establishing the Apollo 40 Under 40 initiative to celebrate innovation in the art and museum sectors. During his editorship he developed the annual Apollo Awards into a global benchmark of excellence.
Widely respected as a speaker and moderator, Tom frequently participates in events about historical and contemporary art, as well as on issues currently facing museums or the art market. He has been responsible for devising numerous content partnerships with international brands, art fairs and other art businesses.
Tom has written many features about leading international museums and artists, as well as on the relationship between art and food. He is a regular contributor to books and exhibition catalogues, and has curated exhibitions and displays at Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury, and the Warburg Institute, London, where he is an associate fellow.
A trustee of Art UK, Tom also sits on the advisory board of Gerry’s Pompeii in London. Prior to his career in arts journalism, Tom completed a DPhil on the relationship between poetry and architecture at the University of Oxford.
